This image is the latest from the easel at PatternArt Studio & Gallery. I was approached by an old friend a few months ago about a commission painting of his own and buddies motorcycles parked in front of Custer’s iconic watering hole, Tony’s Tavern. Now, I love painting motorcycles, after a lifetime of enthusiasm they are a familiar subject for me. The bike owners didn’t want to be part of the painting so I talked them into at least letting me paint their nondescript reflections in the glass door. Also a big part of Custer’s charm is the ever present trains rumbling next to the bustling downtown, so I added a typical Burlington Northern engine, also a stars and stripes graphic was requested. This is kind of a lonesome scene, I think the painting has somewhat of a haunted nature about it. The overall visual impression of a painting usually doesn’t appear to me until its complete, or sometimes not until months later. I do believe after a lifetime of persistently learning to paint, observing nature, light and shadow, line and form, that these images come through me, not from me.
The above images are other motorcycle paintings I have done over the years, some are acrylic and some are egg tempera, there is something fascinating to me about how the sky reflects off polished chrome.
