Commissions

Do you have a beloved place, person, or pet you want to remember forever in a beautiful painting made just for you?

As a working artist, I welcome the opportunity to accept commissioned paintings. If you have a favorite landscape, building, beloved person or pet you want artistically interpreted, please contact me.

People, Places & Motorcycles

I like to paint people and places that impact my life. I relish the challenge of capturing the personality of someone or someplace familiar to me. I also love motorcycles and rendering the reflected sky on polished chrome is irresistible to my artistic sensibility.

PeaceHealth Commission

In January 2019, I was invited to enter paintings into the PeaceHealth “Healing Through Art” exhibit at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, Washington. The hospital purchased for their permanent collection, two acrylic on canvas paintings: “Winter Light,” 48 x 48 inch and “Sunlit Spruce,” 30 x 40 inch. I was then approached by the Exhibition Curator to propose an art installation for the 3rd Floor, North Tower.

The Process

After experimenting with several different materials and layout ideas, I settled on using 1/8” and 1/4” thick expanded PVC sheets. The material is light, flexible, easy to cut and shape. With the right primer, it accepted the acrylic paint well. Using this material, I cut contour shapes and layered them on top of each other for dimension. I wanted to produce more tactile and interesting images than framed paintings on the wall for the viewer. I also decided to continue the Northwest Landscape theme that included some iconic resident critters. Once the ideas were approved with an initial prototype, I produced fifteen original scenics over six months, to be installed at St. Joseph Hospital in the winter of 2020.

I commissioned Ron Pattern for a 15 Image Mural Project to be installed in St. Joseph Hospital, Bellingham, Washington. He was easy to work with, professional, innovative, and creative. The project was completed on time and on budget—and the finished images were stunning.

I first became aware of Ron’s work through the web, where I was struck by the stunning beauty and realism. He agreed to undertake a commissioned portrait and the result was every bit what I had hoped for. I have acquired a number of his Pacific Northwest-themed studio paintings, including an extremely powerful winter river-scape, recently painted on commission. I collect original artwork by many accomplished artists and I consider Ron’s to be among the finest in my possession; they bring immeasurable pleasure to all who enter my home.

I so admire Ron Pattern and his work. A couple of years ago my wife told me I was “too old to get on the boom lift.” So, Ron came to the rescue and refurbished the Carnegie Library Mural. I couldn’t have done it better. Thanks, Ron!
